
Number 3 operator Base had the fastest 4G downloads in Belgium, according to the latest data collected by OpenSignal, which uses measurements gathered by a free app installed by users. The company achieved an average download rate over 4G of just under 45 Mbps, one of the highest recorded by OpenSignal and 5 Mbps more than six months previously, when it tied for the top spot with Orange.
In its previous global survey, OpenSignal placed South Korea in top position with an average of 44.3 Mbps and Belgium sixth with 36 Mbps.
Proximus moved from third place to second in the latest study conducted in May to July, with an average 4G download speed of just under 39 Mbps. Orange slipped into last place as its average dropped to under 34 Mbps from over 38 Mbps six months earlier.
In terms of overall download performance, including 3G, Base increased average speed by over 6 Mbps to 36 Mbps, sharing the top spot with market leader Proximus, while Orange was again in last place at 29 Mbps.
In terms of 4G availability, OpenSignal recorded a three-way draw, with all three Belgian operators above or very close to the 85 percent mark. Base drew level with its rivals, which beat it in this category six months earlier.
By region, Orange took the top spot for availability in Wallonia and tied with Proximus in Flanders, while Base and Proximus shared the lead in Brussels. However, the results were very close with all three operators exceeding 79 percent in Wallonia, 83 percent in Flanders and 87 percent in Brussels.
OpenSignal based its conclusions on 141 million measurements sourced from over 10,000 devices during a 90-day test period starting 01 May 2018.
