BBC launches global iPlayer app in Western Europe
The BBC has announced availability of the global BBC iPlayer App, exclusively on iPad, for free from the App Store from 28 July. At launch, the global iPlayer app is available to audiences across 11 markets in Western Europe. For EUR 6.99 a month or EUR 49.99 a year, the app is initially available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. It offers English language programmes across eight genres: News Specials & Documentaries; Entertainment; Drama; Comedy; Science & Nature; Family & Kids; Music & Culture and Lifestyle. The global version of the BBC iPlayer App marks the start of a pilot phase for the service.

BBC upgrades iPlayer website for connected TVs

The BBC has launched a new version of iPlayer for connected TVs. The new version is designed to offer a simpler, more TV-like experience for users. Each piece of content and function can be reached using just the four direction and Enter keys found on any TV remote. This eliminates complicated page navigation that often comes with services that originate on the web. The new version offers more personalisation features for users including Last Played and Previous Searches, as well as BBC iPlayer Favourites.

BBC iPlayer receives 157 million requests in June

BBC iPlayer received a total of 157 million requests for TV and radio programmes in total in June. Online BBC iPlayer TV requests reached 96 million, online iPlayer radio requests reached 36 million, and TV requests via Virgin Media reached 25 million. Live TV viewing via BBC iPlayer made up 15 percent of all TV requests, with live radio listening accounting for 74 percent of all radio requests. Average daily requests (excluding Virgin) stood at 4.4 million in June –1.2 million per day for radio programmes
