BlackBerry reports strong sales at Z10 launch
BlackBerry reported strong sales for the initial release of its BlackBerry Z10 smartphone. In its home market Canada, the company said the launch date 05 February was the best first day ever for the launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. "In fact, it was more than 50 percent better than any other launch day in our history in Canada," CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement. In the UK, where the phone first launched, the company said it has seen "close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone".

Samsung users least interested in new BlackBerry Z10

The new BlackBerry Z10 is available in the Netherlands since 02 April. In March, the Telecompaper Consumer Panel looked at the level of interest among consumers in the new BlackBerry smartphone. The majority of consumers (68%) are not interested in the phone, with Samsung users most likely to say they won't consider the BlackBerry phone. One in five didn't know yet whether they would consider the BlackBerry as their next device.

Research In Motion reported a small improvement in results for its fiscal fourth quarter to 02 March, but has yet to see any major impact from the launch of BlackBerry 10. Sprint to not sell BlackBerry Z10, waiting for Q10 instead

Sprint Nextel will be the only major US mobile operator to not sell BlackBerry's Z10 touchscreen smartphone when it launches in March, a company spokesman told Bloomberg. Sprint has chosen instead to sell the BlackBerry Q10 model with keypad when it is released later this year.

Orange brings BlackBerry Z10 to France

Orange is the first operator to offer the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone in France, starting at EUR 129.90, the operator reports on its blog. Customers on capped contracts with no tie-in period pay EUR 409.90 for the new LTE phone with a 4.2-in display, 8MP camera and 16GB of storage. The Sosh youth brand also sells the BlackBerry Z10, for EUR 539. All customers are offered a EUR 50 rebate on the listed price when they buy the new phone.

Qtel launches BlackBerry Z10 for QAR 2,599

Qtel has announced the launch of the new BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, which is now available in all Qtel Shops for QAR 2,599. Qtel said it is the first company to make the new phone available in its shops across Qatar. It said BlackBerry subscription packages start from QAR 15 per week for 250 MB of data for BlackBerry Hala customers; and QAR 60 per month for 1 GB of data for Shahry customers. All BlackBerry services, including BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), are active from when the SIM card is first used.

BlackBerry to withdraw from Japan

BlackBerry will stop offering smartphones in the Japanese market amid poor sales, reports The Nikkei. The company's market share, once around 5 percent, has shrivelled to 0.3 percent. The firm decided to withdraw in part because it could not justify the cost of modifying its operating system to accommodate the Japanese language. While it will not release new models here, it will continue offering support to existing users.

Blackberry has announced it has appointed Richard "Dick" Lynch and Bert Nordberg to the company's board of directors. With the addition of Lynch and Nordberg, the company's board of directors now consists of twelve members, of which ten are independent members and including an independent chair.

Phones 4u sees strong demand for BlackBerry Z10

UK mobile retailer Phones 4u has sold out of the new BlackBerry Z10 in over 55 percent of its 680 stores during the first weekend of sales. Canadian mobile operators BCE, Rogers and Telus start selling the BlackBerry Z10 touchphone across the country on 5 February, to be followed by the Q10 model, which has a physical keyboard, in April.
