
BT NGN roll-out to reach 35% of population in 2012 - study

The current deployment of next-generation access (NGA) broadband announced so far by BT will reach around 35 percent of the UK population by 2012, according to Point Topic estimates. Based on exchange roll-out announcements from Openreach, Point Topic estimates that BT's planned NGA roll-out will cover 843,000 people or 0.1 percent of the UK population in Q4 2009; rising to 1.49 million (2.4%) in Q2 2010, 4.53 million (7.4%) in Q4 2010, 6.50 million (10.6%) in Q2 2011, 10 million (16.3%) in Q4 2011, 15 million (24.4%) in Q2 2012 and 21.35 million people or 34.8 percent of the population in Q4 2012. Tim Johnson, Chief Analyst at Point Topic, says that BT's current plans will not even cover half of the areas of high demand.
