BT, Sky score broadcast rights for Premier League in 2019-2022

Wednesday 14 February 2018 | 08:51 CET | News

The Premier League said it has awarded five of the seven live packages of its UK broadcast rights, with BT Sports getting Package A and Sky Sports Packages B, C, D, and E. Premier League said the value at this stage of the process is GBP 4.464 billion, not including the two live packages that still need to be sold. Multiple bidders have expressed interest in these packs. The awards are for seasons from 2019 through to 2022.

The news means prices for the top English football have not gone up since the previous bidding round in 2015. Sky and BT paid a total of GBP 5.14 billion for the previous three years, and while two packages remain in the latest tender, these 40 matches are unlikely to set a new record in the cost of the football rights. In the previous round, Sky faced an over 80 percent increase in price after BT entered the market with its own sports TV plans.

Sky specified that its four packs won are for 128 games per season, up from the 126 it currently shows. The operator paid GBP 1.193 billion per year for the packages, down GBP 199 million per year, a 16 percent cost reduction per game compared to its current agreement. The deal will offer Sky Sports viewers every first-pick weekend match, plus Saturday evening fixtures for the first time, all screened on Sky's Premier League channel.

BT Sport bought the rights for GBP 295 million per season, and said it was in talks with the Premier League regarding the remaining rights. BT will pay a deposit this month of GBP 26.5 million, followed by six instalments of around GBP 145 million from July 2019, payable every six months until December 2021. The company will continue to show games at 17.30 on Saturdays next season, and then move to Saturday lunchtime fixtures from August 2019.

All packages comes with 32 games, with different levels of picks. Package A will show games on Saturdays at 12.30,  Package B for games on Saturdays at 17.30, Package C for for 24 games on Sundays at 14.00 hours and eight games on Saturdays at 19.45 and Package D for all games on Sundays at 16.30 pm. Package E finally is for 24 games on Mondays at 20.00 hours or Fridays at 19.30-20.00, and eight games on Sundays at 14.00.
