BT tests G.Fast with Huawei
Huawei announced a technical field trial with BT of its G.Fast technology to boost the speed of copper lines to levels similar to fibre. Huawei said the technology has the possibility to support Gigabit speeds without causing the major upgrade disruption associated with fibre-to-the-premises technology. 

The G.Fast trial is located close to the BT Adastral Park R&D centre in Ipswich and includes multi-port G.Fast equipment installed in underground distribution points. G.Fast uses time division duplex (TDD) technology and supports up to 1 Gbps bandwidth access per twisted pair within a distance of 100 metres, a tenfold speed increase compared with VDSL2 access. Vectoring technology is used to reduce cross talk on the copper pairs. 

The G.Fast technology can work at distances of up to 250 metres, and Huawei said most typical drop cables in the UK are considerably shorter. The ITU is expected to release a draft of the G.Fast standard, to which Huawei has contributed, by the end of 2013.

BT Openreach picks Swansea as third city for G.Fast trials

BT Openreach announced at a UK Network Operators Forum (UKNOF) meeting this week that it plans to run a G.Fast trial in a third city, Swansea, reports Think Broadband. The company had previously announced that it would hold trials of the technology offering 330 Mbps downstream and 30-50 Mbps upstream in Gosforth and Huntingdon. The trials stating this summer will pass around 4,000 homes with two service options, G.Fast and a new faster fibre on demand product offering 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps.

BT to start two G.fast city pilots this summer

BT plans to test G.fast in two pilot locations in summer 2015 and hopes the technology will allow it to deliver up to 500 Mbps speeds to most of the UK by 2025, CEO Gavin Patterson announced. ITU gives final approval for G.fast standard

ITU members have achieved final approval of G.fast, the new broadband standard designed to deliver access speeds of up to 1Gbps over existing phone lines. The standard answers to service providers' need for a complement to fibre to the home (FTTH) technologies in scenarios where G.fast proves the more cost-efficient strategy. The Broadband Forum will run its first plugfest for January 2015 to ensure compliance with the G.fast standard and certify chipsets and equipment.

BT has completed a trial of Fibre To The Disribution Point (FTTdp) G.fast technology at its Adastral Park R&D centre in Ipswich which achieved 786 Mbps downstream and 231 Mbps upstream over a 19 meter length of copper. BT Openreach starts new VDSL vectoring trial

The second phase of BT Openreach's VDSL vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5) trial has started and will run for at least three months. G.Fast will be the next evolution for broadband over copper networks. Over a short loop, typically 100 meters, broadband speeds of over 1 Gbps are possible. The ITU has approved the G.Fast standards on 04 April, with finalization expected in December. The network industry has some comprehensive testing ahead, explains Robin Mersh, CEO of standards group Broadband Forum. He sees no reason for network operators not to deploy G.Fast.
