European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has proposed MEP Mariya Gabriel as the new Commissioner for the Digital Society and Economy.
Gabriel is Bulgaria's proposed new commissioner, after Kristalina Georgieva resigned to become head of the World Bank. Gunther Oettinger, Germany's commissioner, took over Georgieva's spot as Commissioner responsible for Budget and Human Resources, leaving the Digital position open.
Gabriel (38) will lead the implementation of the EC's Digital Single Market Strategy, working with Vice-President Andrus Ansip. Her appointment will become official after the Council of the EU consults with the European Parliament on Juncker's proposal. She will also undergo an exchange of views with the European Parliament before taking up her new role.
Gabriel has served as a member of the European Parliament since 2009. Since 2014 she is a VP of the EPP group.
