CableLabs publishes Docsis 4.0 standard to take cable networks to 10G

CableLabs announced the release of the Docsis 4.0 specification, to take coax cable networks to speeds of 10 Gbps. This doubles the maximum download speed under the current Docsis 3.1 standard and also delivers a four-fold increase in the maximum upload speed, to 6 Gbps. CableLabs said the specification also brings improvements in latency, security and reliability. 

The 4.0 specification development started in August 2016, and the final version includes both full duplex and extended spectrum capabilities. The next steps ahead of commercial deployments will be interoperability events and equipment certification.

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has added enterprise-level security to its OpenRoaming service with the help of new partner and infrastructure security expert Kyrio, owned by CableLabs. The OpenRoaming standard was relaunched in May, with the aim of ensuring seamless connectivity for users going between Wi-Fi networks.

Intel, Comcast lead cable industry efforts to deliver 10G broadband, Wi-Fi 6 in the home

Intel announced at CES 2019 that it has signed a new deal with Comcast to help bring 10 Gbps speeds and Wi-Fi 6 to homes. Under the deal, Intel will optimise its 8th Gen Intel Core processors for pCs to deliver Gigabit Wi-Fi from Comcast's xFi Advanced Gateways. The two companies will also work together to drive the adoption of Wi-Fi 6 in the home and develop a global standard for 10 Gbps.

SCTE joins Comcast, Liberty Global in challenge to improve cable energy use

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) and its global arm, the International Society ­of Broadband Experts (ISBE) said it has teamed with Comcast and Liberty Global to launch the Adaptive Power Challenge, aimed at pushing the development of new ways to manage energy across broadband networks. The judging panel will include representatives from Comcast, Liberty Global, Cox, Canada's Rogers and Shaw, and CableLabs.

Cisco announced that it's working with CableLabs on ways to make Docsis-based cable networks suitable for mobile backhaul. The dense cable networks could provide an alternative to fibre to support the expected growing number of small cells for 4G and 5G networks.
