Ceconomy confirms departure of CEO, appoints interim replacement

Ceconomy, the owner of retailers Media Markt and Saturn, has announced the departure of chief executive officer Jorg Werner, after an extraordinary supervisory board meeting.

Supervisory board member Bernhard Duttmann takes over the post of CEO for twelve months, with responsibility for the group's strategy. The company said that it continues to implement its transformation strategy. For this purpose, it has established a so-called Transformation Committee led by Duttmann, who becomes Labour Director and is responsible for Human Resources, too. 

Duttmann was an interim member of the management board of Ceconomy from January to March 2019. He set the course for a transformation at MediaMarktSaturn together with the management team. Duttmann and CFO Karin Sonnenmoser now form the management board of Ceconomy.

Media Markt and Saturn said it has reopened stores in regions with a stable seven-day incidence of fewer than 50 new Covid-19 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. In cities and regions with a seven-day incidence of between 50 and 100 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, the retailing company offers "Click & Meet" services to enable customers to shop by appointment. The company also provides a "Click & Collect" service and the option to order by phone.

Ceconomy sees sales decline, earnings improve in Q1

Ceconomy, the owner of retailers Media Markt and Saturn, said that its sales declined by 0.5 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2019/20 to EUR 6.82 billion. The DACH region saw a decrease in sales of 0.2 percent and Western and Southern Europe a fall of 2.9 percent, while in Eastern Europe, sales rose by 11.3 percent, with Turkey posting double-digit growth and Poland a slight decline.

Ceconomy withholds dividend to reinforce equity, progress with reorganisation and efficiency programme

Ceconomy, the owner of retailers Media Markt and Saturn, has announced that its management and supervisory boards have decided not to recommend a dividend at the next general meeting. The company has justified the decision by saying that it needs to strengthen its equity, that it has incurred expenses in connection with its reorganisation and efficiency programme, and because of upcoming investments.

Ceconomy sees small increase in general sales in Q4, online sales grow 4%

In Germany, for example, campaigns including the one launched for the 40th anniversary of MediaMarkt more than compensated for the effects of the strong VAT campaigns of the previous year. The Netherlands was impacted by a competitive situation and temporary difficulties in terms of product availability due to the switch to a new online warehouse, while sales continued to develop solidly in Turkey, the company said.

The heirs of the late MediaMarkt co-founder Erich Kellerhals have rebuffed a billion-euro offer for their equity stake in the Media-Saturn Group put forth by the electronics retailer and MediaMarkt Saturn parent company Ceconomy, reported German business publication WirtschaftsWoche (WiWo). Ceconomy offered the Kellerhals' firm Convergenta cash and Ceconomy shares amounting to a total of EUR 1 billion in return for the family's equity stake and extensive veto rights in Media-Saturn.

Media-Saturn negotiates with M.video on sale of Russian business

The electronics retailer Media-Saturn holding is negotiating with its Russian competitor M.video on the sale of Media-Saturn branches in Russia, the concern's parent company Ceconomy said on 13 April, reported DPA. The transaction would apply also to the minority stake in M.video. Media-Saturn has recorded shrinking revenues because of the difficult environment in the Russian market.
