Cesky Telecom and Shell launch WiFi hotspots
CESKY TELECOM, in co-operation with Shell Czech Republic’s network of petrol stations, is launching fifteen new locations for wireless Internet connection (Wi-Fi Hot Spots) at selected petrol stations. A list of these is presented in Appendix 1. This project enables those interested to connect to the Internet free of charge at random locations with an access point (Wi-Fi Hot Spot). The only condition is the required technical equipment, such as a properly configured Wi-Fi card for portable computers or digital planners – PDA’s. The current pilot operation of public wireless Internet access has thus expanded in a significant way – the number of access points has grown to 35 since the start of the project. Until now, access points were located only in selected CESKY TELECOM TELEPOINT sales outlets. A list of these is presented in Appendix 2. “Co-operation with Shell Czech Republic is one of the next steps toward increasing the potential and availability of Wi-Fi services. Through them it is now possible to connect to the Internet while on the road,” stated Ondrej Felix, Chairman of the Board and General Director, CESKY TELECOM “Our company’s main goal is to satisfy the needs and wishes of our customers. In 1999, we launched our long-term program for improving the quality of our fuel and services; this was the year that we presented our Shell V-Power fuel to the Czech market. Shell V-Power Racing followed in 2001, and we are entering the present with this joint pilot project. There is always something to be improved,” says Vladimir Vacek, Director of Petrol Station Operation, Shell Czech Republic. A Wi-Fi Hot Spot is a space with one or more access points that take and extend a signal through the surrounding area by means of antennas. Each access point is connected to CESKY TELECOM’s backbone IP network with a speed of 256 kb/s. In comparison with currently available mobile technology for Internet access, the Wi-Fi Hot Spots service provides considerably higher access speed. During the test operation, CESKY TELECOM is planning its next phased expansion. For the duration of the pilot operation, customers can use a high-quality connection to the Internet free of charge at every Wi-Fi Hot Spot.
