Chile mobile tariffs drop 25% following portability launch

Mobile tariffs in Chile have decreased on average by 25 percent following the launch of the number portability system, SoyChile reports, citing Chilean telecommunications minister Pedro Pablo Errazuriz. The portability system implementation also allowed the entry of new mobile operators on the local market, including Virgin Mobile, VTR Movil and Nextel, Errazuriz added.

According to the minister, Chile ported 776,338 mobile numbers since the MNP system was launched on 16 January 2012. Chilean operators also ported over 67,048 fixed numbers since the fixed number portability was launched in December 2011.

VTR hits 150,000 mobile customers in Chile

Chilean operator VTR Movil has reached 150,000 mobile voice and broadband customers. Of these, nearly 40 percent are postpaid subscribers, VTR general manager Guillermo Ponce told Emol. Of the overall 150,000 mobile customers, around 70 percent were already VTR fixed services subscribers, Ponce added.

Chile ports over 811,000 numbers

Chile ported 811,212 numbers since the mobile number portability was launched on 16 January 2012. Of these, 749,427 are mobile numbers. Claro led mobile number portings in the period, adding nearly 123,669 net ported customers by 31 December 2012, according to a report from Chilean telecoms regulator Subtel. Virgin attracted 16,828 net users, followed by VTR (9,535), Nextel (6,559), and Telsur (811). Movistar lost 105,659 net ported customers and Entel shed 51,800 users in the twelve-month period.

25 companies request MVNO license in Chile

Around 25 companies have submitted applications for MVNO license in Chile, Estrategia Online reports, citing Jorge Atton, Chile's undersecretary for telecommunications. Atton expects the number of MVNOs on the Chilean market to "explode" in 2013.

Chile completes fixed number portability implementation

Chile has completed the implementation of its fixed number portability system. Launched in December 2011 in the Arica area, the system is now available across all Chilean regions. Up to now, around 33,844 residential and business users have ported their fixed-line number. Additionally, some 494,894 mobile numbers were ported since the system was launched in January this year, according to data provided by Chilean telecoms regulator Subtel.

Claro attracts 42% of ported customers in Chile

Claro reports it has attracted over 42 percent of the overall ported customers in Chile. Chile launched its mobile number portability in January. Claro says over 100,000 mobile phone users opted to port their number to the Claro network.

Chile launches fixed number portability system, MNP trial

Chile has launched the fixed number portability system. Chilean customers can currently port their fixed numbers in the Arica region. Arica has around 36,000 households with fixed telephony lines. The system will be made available to the Santiago area in March 2012, to be then gradually expanded across the country. Additionally, Chile has rolled out a mobile number portability trial. The pilot will take about one month. The mobile number portability system is scheduled for commercial launch on 16 January 20
