The number of mobile users in China has hit 555 million in January, after the operators added 8.48 million new customers in the month. The continued drop in handset prices has lead to a significant increase in mobile users, a spokesperson from the ministry of information industry (MII) told Xinhua. However, the number of fixed-line users fell by about 1.5 million to less than 364 million. This is the sixth consecutive month of decline. This year, the ministry expects the number of total telephony subscribers to reach 976 million with mobile accounting for 46.4 percent of the population.
