China further limits gaming time for minors

China’s National Press and Publication Administration said gamers under the age of 18 can spend only one hour of gameplay on Fridays, weekends and holidays, from 8.00 to 9.00 pm, Reuters reported, citing state news agency Xinhua.

Outside of these hours, online gaming companies will not be allowed to provide gaming services to these users in any form. Firms will need to put real name verification systems in place. The regulator oversees the country's video games market.

Before the ruling, minors could play games for three hours on holidays and 1.5 hour on other days. 

The regulator said it will also increase the frequency and intensity of inspections for online gaming companies.

ByteDance, the Chinese owner of TikTok, said it will be limiting app time for users under 14 years old to 40 minutes per day, the Verge reported, citing a blog post from the company in Chinese. People under the age of 14 will only be able to access the service, known as Douyin in China, between 6.00 and 10.00 am.

Chinese regulators have temporarily slowed their approvals of new online games in the country, as a way to reduce gaming addiction among young people, South China Morning Post reports, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter. Regulators held a meeting on 8 September to discuss with representatives from Tencent and NetEase how they plan to implement Beijing's new restrictions on video gaming for minors.

Tencent Games launches Midnight Patrol to keep kids off games at night

China's Tencent Games launched a time-sensitive facial recognition system called "Midnight Patrol" that's meant to curb excessive play time among children and teenagers, according to online publication Sixth Tone, citing the company. Starting from 6 July, the gaming platform's facial verification system will help monitor players and detect individuals who spend too much time online at night. The initiative is aimed at deterring minors from using "tricks" to pose as adults between 10 pm and 8 am.
