China Mobile 9-month profit grows 4.6% as data traffic doubles

China Mobile saw its operating revenue reach CNY 569.5 billion for the first nine months of 2017, which represents an increase of 4.9 percent year-on-year. Revenue from telecommunications services amounted to CNY 515.3 billion, up 7.1 percent compared to the year-earlier period. EBITDA stood at CNY 211.3 billion, up 5.5 percent year-on-year, while profit rose 4.6 percent to CNY 92.1 billion for the 9-month period.

China Mobile ended September with 878 million mobile customers. ARPU increased by 0.8 percent year-on-year to CNY 60.5. The number of 4G customers reached 622 million, representing a net increase of 86.72 million for the first three quarters.

The operator also reports that its data traffic business maintained rapid growth with handset data traffic recording a 113 percent increase year-on-year. Handset customer DOU reached 1.2GB, and 4G customer DOU exceeded 1.5GB. Meanwhile, due to the substitution impact of over-the-top (OTT) business, voice services continued to decline with total voice usage decreasing by 7.1 percent compared to the same period last year. 

At 30 September 2017, China Mobile had 100 million wireline broadband customers, which represents a net increase of 25.8 million for the first three quarters. ARPU of wireline broadband customers grew to CNY 35.1.

In the first three quarters of 2017, China Mobile’s telecommunications services revenue climbed 7.1 percent year-on-year to CNY 515.3 billion. The Group’s sales of terminals continued to fall with revenue from the sales of products going down by 11.8 percent year-on-year to CNY 54.2 billion. Operating revenue rose 4.9 percent year-on-year to CNY 569.5 billion.
