China Unicom launches CUniq MVNO in UK

China Unicom Global has launched its overseas mobile virtual network operator service dubbed ‘CUniq’ in the UK. The operator has also unveiled a one-card-multiple-number service. Customers can purchase a SIM abroad and stay connected with UK, Hong Kong and mainland China numbers. The UK launch expands China Unicom’s MVNO business from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe.

The CUniq service is jointly launched by CUG and Manx Telecom. It integrates network coverage provided by O2, the mobile network operator owned by Telefonica, and the global services offered by China Unicom. Telefonica is a minority shareholder in Unicom.

China Unicom said it plans to enhance its CUniq MVNO service in the future, as well as launch it in other countries and regions, such as the US, Australia and Japan.

The CUniq one-card-multiple-number service enables customers to keep one SIM card with mainland China, Hong Kong and UK numbers embedded. Customers can access multi-user voice call services in these three areas and share data with others in 45 countries and regions. In addition, it offers 24/7 bilingual customer service (English and Chinese).

New RWG Mobile MVNO launches in Wales

A new mobile service has launched in Wales called RWG Mobile. The service works through an app, available for iOS and Android phones. This app allows users to make Wi-Fi calls, have multiple profiles and up to five different numbers. The app is free and users can call and message other RWG Mobile users for free. Call rates to non RWG Mobile users are charged in 60-second blocks. The app requires a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection to work. RWG Mobile is operated by Red White & Green Communications.

Telefonica sells China Unicom stake for EUR 322 mln

Telefonica has sold a 1.51 percent stake in China Unicom for around USD 322 million in a move to raise cash to reduce its net debt. According to a statement submitted to Spain's markets regulator CNMV, Telefonica sold 361.8 million shares at HKD 7.80 per share in a transaction managed by Bank of America. It still retains a stake of around 1 percent in China Unicom. Telefonica and Chinese mobile operator China Unicom have announced plans to launch the  low-cost C630 smartphone from Chinese vendor Phicomm in key Telefonica markets in Latin America later this year. Youku Tudou receives MVNO license in China

Chinese internet television company Youku Tudou has received an MVNO license from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The Minitry has issued a fourth batch of licenses as part of its large-scale trial of opening the Chinese mobile sector up to MVNOs. China Unicom improves profits despite revenue slowdown

China Unicom reported first-half revenues up 3.6 percent year-on-year to CNY 149.57 billion. Mobile service revenues rose 11.7 percent to CNY 81.34 billion, and fixed service revenues increased 4.5 percent to CNY 45.21 billion. Alibaba to launch MVNO services in June

Busap to offer MVNO services under China MCom brand

Chinese bus television network operator Busap Holding Company plans to launch mobile services under the brand name China MCom.
