Cisco adopts machine learning in new enterprise switches
Cisco is adopting machine learning to improve its networking equipment for businesses. The company calls it "intent-based networking", where equipment moves away from tedious IT processes and automates the network's intent in order to manage millions of devices. The new systems will also be able to adapt based on the data collected and its context, including using data collected by Cisco from its systems around the world.

The company is introducing new products under its Digital Network Architecture that take advantage of the new features. This includes a new family of Catalyst 9000 switches, which are available to order from this month. The switches will come with an increased range of software subscription options, from the DNA and Cisco One range.

From August, the company will launch the DNA Center, to give IT teams a centralised management dashboard, and Software-Defined Access (SD-Access), for simpler, automated policy enforcement to control network access for users and devices. Cisco said its initial analysis with field trial customers and internal testing have shown a reduction in network provisioning times with SD-Access of 67 percent, improved issue resolution by 80 percent, reduced security breach impact by 48 percent and opex savings of 61 percent.

Also new is Encrypted Traffic Analytics, available from September. Using Cisco's Talos cyber intelligence and machine learning to analyze metadata traffic patterns, the network can identify the fingerprints of known threats even in encrypted traffic, without decrypting it and impacting data privacy. Cisco said threat detection in encrypted traffic offers up to 99 percent accuracy, with less than 0.01 percent false positives.

In total, 75 enterprises and organizations are conducting early field trials with the company's new products, including DB Systel, Jade University of Applied Sciences, NASA, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Scentsy, UZ Leuven and Wipro.
