Cisco to buy Meraki for USD 1.2 bln
Cisco has agreed to acquire wireless networking specialist Meraki for USD 1.2 billion. Based in San Francisco, Meraki targets mid-size companies with Wi-Fi, switching, security and mobile device management equipment centrally managed from the cloud. Meraki's products support BYOD, guest networking, application control, WAN optimization, application firewall and other advanced networking services. The acquisition helps Cisco expand in software-based networking and serving the mobile workforce, while strengthening its offering for the mid-market and its Unified Access platform. Meraki was founded by members of MIT's Laboratory for Computer Science. The company will form the new Cloud Networking Group at Cisco. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of Cisco's fiscal year 2013, subject to regulatory review.

Meraki raises USD 40 million

WLAN networks specialist Meraki has raised another USD 40 million, the company confirmed to TechCrunch. The financing comes mostly from existing investors, including Sequoia and Northgate. Around half of the USD 40 million is debt financing, with the principal to be repaid within five years. Meraki will use the funds to keep a cash cushion, pay for its new headquarters, and aggressively hire in sales. The latest round brings its total financing to USD 80 million.
