Claro, Vivo, Oi and TIM win 4G licences in Brazil
Vivo, Claro, TIM Brasil and Oi have been chosen to provide the 4G mobile internet service in Brazil. The companies submitted bids of BRL 1.05 billion, BRL 630.191 million, BRL 340 million and BRL 330.851 million respectively, winning the spectrum auction held on 12 June by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).  Frequencies in the 450 MHz band for rural mobile telephony were auctioned, too, and as there were no bids, the four operators that won the 4G auction will also be required to invest in that segment.

In the 4G auction notice, Anatel did not define what internet speeds operators must offer for the 2.5 GHz band service. For the 450 MHz band, the download speed must be at least 256 Kbps and the upload speed, 128 Kbps. In addition to the national and rural telephony lots, Anatel is also auctioning 268 lots of frequency bands for regional operations, and Sky Brasil won at least ten lots.

Brazil govt signs rural internet agreement with Huawei

Brazil's Communications Minister Paulo Bernardo, and Huawei do Brasil president Veni Shone, have signed a statement of commitment to develop new technology for the use of the 450 MHz frequency range. Huawei plans local 4G production in Brazil

Chinese manufacturer Huawei wants to negotiate with the Brazilian government to obtain tax exemptions for the production of 4G modems in Brazil, according to local portal Teletime. The company already outsources the manufacturing of such equipment with 3G technology to Brazil's Flextronics and is in the process of obtaining tax breaks for network equipment. Huawei is also taking part in the experimental 4G project during the Rio+20 event, for which it has supplied 400 modems with LTE technology.

Oi offers 4G demonstrations at Rio+20 event

Brazilian operator Oi started demonstrations of 4G internet at a company stand at the Rio+20 conference in Rio de Janeiro. The demonstration is run in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson and Gemalto, under authorization from Anatel. Visitors to the event can try out the new technology. Earlier this week, Oi acquired one of the lots of 4G spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band.

Anatel could auction leftover U band frequencies in 2012

The president of Brazilian regulator Anatel, Joao Rezende, said it may be possible to organise a new auction in the second half of 2012 of the 53 lots of spectrum in the U band and 3.5GHz band left unsold in the last tender. Anatel raises BRL 2.9 bln in 4G auction, below expectation

The frequency auction for the LTE mobile telephony resulted in total revenue of BRL 2.93 billion from the national and regional lots. The premium over the minimum set price was 31.27 percent. The number of mobile internet users in Brazil almost doubled last year, according to communications minister Paolo Bernardo.
