Code of conduct concerning SMS messaging in the making
Dutch regulator OPTA, Dutch consumer organizations and all mobile operators have decided to join efforts in realizing a code of conduct regarding SMS messaging. SMS-spam is becoming more and more a nuisance and most mobile customers have no idea how to get rid of subscriptions on SMS messages. OPTA accused the mobile operators in an earlier stage not to be interested in such a code of conduct. All parties involved now have decided to join efforts. OPTA has expressed its recognition about the attitude of all mobile operators in finding a solution for this problem. As a result of yesterday's meeting [February 26] a next round of discussion on this subject is planned for next month. At this meeting content providers are also invited. At the end of April the new code of conduct will be put into action. One of the mobile operators in the Netherlands, O2, has taken the initiative to provide all its customers with a so called distress button. With just a click O2 customers can cancel all subscription to SMS messaging by sending a special code. OPTA expressed once again its growing concern about irregularities concerning SMS. Failing canceling procedures for consumers after taking subscription on SMS messaging was one of the main reasons for OPTA to start action. All parties involved expressed concern about a possible negative image regarding SMS.
