Comsol Networks said it is working with Verizon and Samsung to launch 5G fixed wireless trials in South Africa. They aim to delivering a product rivals FTTx by early-2019. This will be achieved using the "pre-5G" proprietary standard from Verizon’s 5G Technical Forum (5GTF), which will ultimately be converted into the 5G New Radio (5GNR) standards once they have been confirmed, Comsol said.
Comsol will use Verizon's leadership in developing the Verizon 5G Technology Forum of key industry players. 5GTF is a common, scalable platform for fixed wireless deployments in the 28 GHz and 39 GHz bands. Verizon has tested and deployed 5G residential broadband service over millimetre wave spectrum.
In early trials in the US, Verizon has shown the potential of the 28 GHz millimetre spectrum, which has been identified for 5G services by US Federal Communications Commission, said Comsol CEO Iain Stevenson. Stevenson said that 5G fixed wireless access holds the promise of connecting millions of South Africans with high-speed connectivity that would never be possible with fibre, which requires significant physical investment.
In terms of the network infrastructure, Samsung will provide base station equipment, the evolved packet core, and customer premises equipment. Sung Yoon, CEO of Samsung Electronics Africa, said the company is excited to partner with Comsol to demonstrate how important Africa is to the 5G "revolution".
