Deported MTN Uganda CEO returns after presidential pardon

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni has pardoned deported MTN Uganda CEO Wim Vanhelleputte and ordered the Immigration Department to remove him from the Stop List. Vanhelleputte was deported in February over allegations of undermining state security. He was due back in Uganda on 30 May. 

MTN Group president Rob Shuter announced that Museveni had exercised executive discretion to permit Vanhelleputte's unconditional return to Uganda. Shuter said MTN Uganda is a law-abiding corporate citizen and is committed to continue to play its part in the development of Uganda.

MTN Uganda advertises positions of deported staff

MTN Uganda has advertised the positions of three deported members of senior staff, the Daily Monitor reported.  The positions advertised are General Manager-Mobile Financial Services, General Manager-Sales and Distribution, and Chief Marketing Officer. Italian national Elsa Mussolini was General Manager-Mobile Financial Services, French national Olivier Prentout was Chief Marketing Office and Annie Bilenge-Tabura, a Rwandan, was General Manager-Sales and Distribution.

Deported MTN Uganda CEO sues government

Feported MTN Uganda CEO Wim Vanhelleputte has sued the country's attorney general, arguing that his deportation was irrational and illegal, the Monitor reported. MTN announces deportation of MTN Uganda CEO

MTN Group has announced that Wim Vanhelleputte, the CEO of MTN Uganda, has been deported from that country. MTN said that it has not been notified of the grounds for the deportation and is working to establish the precise reasons.
