In the US, T-Mobile does not have a fiber network. In fact, yhey rely on third-party companies. Fiber and hybird-fibre coax networks should definitely be deployed. The traditional twisted-pair telephone wiring has run its course and will be obsolete within a period of 5-10 years. Added to this, the new R&D on coaxial cable networks being standardized at CableLabs show that in 5-10 years time, Coaxial Cable will be able to compete with 10G Fiber-to-the-house. It's so fast, that a period of a few years ago, T-Mobile was awarding about 70% of its cell site connectivity contracts to Comcast. Cable networks in the US are offering more advanced than fiber optic providers. When I had CenturyLink 1G service on fiber, the best speed actually delivered was about 650mb. I switched to cable and got 2G service without the need to run new cable (or fiber) to the house. Copper telephone lines have run their course.
