DirecTV and Sky Mexico satellites successfully launched

US-based DirecTV has announced that the DirecTV-15 and Sky Mexico-1 direct-to-home relay satellites for digital television services were successfully launched from French Guiana on 27 May. The company said the satellites will significantly increase its HD capacity, securing the future of 4K Ultra HD as well as backing up its existing satellite fleet.

DirecTV-15 is an Airbus Defence and Space-built satellite based on the Eurostar E3000 platform that will provide services in the Ku-, Ka- and R-bands for the 20 million-plus customers of DirecTV. Sky Mexico-1, meanwhile, is an Orbital ATK-produced satellite built using the GeoStar-2 platform. Equipped with Ku- and R-band transponders, the satellite will will double HD capacity for Sky’s Mexican subsidiary, which is owned by Mexico’s Grupo Televisa and DirecTV, providing direct-to-home television broadcast services to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
