Dish gets FCC clearance for mobile network
The US Federal Communications Commission has approved Dish Network's application to use part of its satellite spectrum for a mobile network. The decision removes regulatory barriers that limited the so-called AWS-4 and H Block spectrum to satellite use. Under the order, Dish would be required to restrict a portion of its spectrum to avoid interference with neighboring airwaves, FCC officials told the Wall Street Journal. The company would also be required to build out at least 70 percent of the new network within six years. Dish said it will study the order before deciding how to move forward with its mobile plans. The FCC also approved a proposal to auction other frequencies in the H Block in 2013. The proceeds from this would help fund the national Public Safety Network. The frequencies are adjacent to Dish's spectrum, as well as frequencies used by Sprint.
