Disney pulls Fox channel in Africa

Disney said it will be pulling its Fox channel from TV platforms in Africa at the end of September, including DStv, StarTimes and StarSat. A Walt Disney Africa spokesperson confirmed to MyBroadband that the channel would shut down on these platforms on 30 September.

This is the third channel owned by Disney to be axed from DStv in 2020. The spokesperson said there was nothing else to announce at this time and that Disney “looked forward to continuing bringing consumers across Africa a vast array of factual, sports, and kids programming” from its other channels.

Disney previously said that Disney+ would be launching in South Africa during the winter of 2022.

The Walt Disney Company plans to launch its video streaming service Disney+ in South Africa next summer, in June 2022, Media24 reported. Disney pushed back the launch to enable a broader introduction next summer, in also parts of the Middle East, as well as in South Africa. The rest of the African continent seems to be excluded from this broader launch, at least for now.

MultiChoice South Africa to drop Disney XD, Fox Life channels

MultiChoice South Africa has announced that it will cut two more DStv channels at the end of September, namely Disney XD and Fox Life. The company told TVwithThinus that these two channels will stop airing on the DStv platform on 1 October, noting that the change comes amid an ongoing review of channels by content providers and platform partners. Some of the Disney XD content will migrate to the Disney Channel.
