The Dutch government has explored the opportunities for a Dutch research and innovation ecosystem around 5G and 6G mobile technology. The focus of the study was on the innovation opportunities for the Netherlands. In a report, Dialogic looked at the development of the technology from 5G to 6G. The research bureau talked to experts including KPN, TNO, the government, Ericsson Netherlands, Nokia Netherlands, Signify and NXP.
The global ecosystem was mapped out, together with the Dutch ecosystem of companies, projects and start-ups. The report provides insight into global developments and the position of the Dutch research and innovation ecosystem within it. The policy options for the Netherlands are also discussed in a SWOT analysis: the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Strengths are the excellent mobile networks, the reliable infrastructure and niche knowledge at universities and knowledge institutes. A weakness is that there are no strong Dutch companies active in telecom: no international vendors, producers and also no international MNO. A threat is that the remaining companies will be taken over. Social resistance to antennas is also a factor. The opportunities of 5G and 6G are not unique to the Netherlands. Certain industry verticals can benefit from them.
