eAccess, Rakuten partner on mobile data venture
Japanese communications provider eAccess and e-commerce group Rakuten have established an LTE mobile data joint venture called Rakuten Emobile. The new company will launch Rakuten Super WiFi, a mobile data service, on 1 October with pre-registration starting on 19 September. A total of JPY 500 million has been invested in the new company, with a 51 percent stake held by Rakuten and a 49 percent stake held by eAccess.

eAccess to launch Pocket WiFi in August

Japanese communications provider eAccess will begin selling the Pocket WiFi (GL09P) which supports download speeds of up to 110 Mbps in August this year. The mobile data terminal supports AXGP, LTE, and WCDMA networks, as well as Softbank's Wi-Fi Spot service. The device features a 5,000 mAh battery, a colour touchscreen, and a power supply function to be able to serve as backup power supply for smartphones and tablets.

Rakuten grows Q1 revenues 26%

Japanese online retailer Rakuten saw its net income for the first quarter grow by 40 percent to JPY 14.2 billion from JPY 10.2 billion a year earlier. Revenues totalled JPY 113.1 billion, up 26 percent from JPY 89.8 billion as internet services revenues rose 15 percent to JPY 68.7 billion, internet finance revenues grew 57 percent to JPY 46.2 billion, but other revenues dipped 5.5 percent to JPY 6.7 billion.

Softbank to buy eAccess for JPY 180 bln

Japanese mobile operator Softbank has agreed to acquire its smaller rival eAccess for JPY 180 billion. The acquisition gives Softbank access to spectrum in the 1.7GHz band to expand its LTE coverage. With the takeover of eAccess' 4.2 million customers, Softbank also will pass KDDI to become the second-largest mobile operator in Japan, with a total of over 39 million customers, based on end-August figures including its PHS affiliate Willcom.
