EC announces EUR 50 mln funds for 5G mobile research
The European Commission (EC) has announced funding of EUR 50 million for research to deliver 5G mobile technology by 2020. EC Vice President Neelie Kroes said the aim of the funds was to put Europe back in the lead of the global mobile industry. She said she wanted 5G to be pioneered by European industry, based on European research and creating jobs in Europe. 

METIS, 5GNOW, iJOIN, TROPIC, Mobile Cloud Networking, COMBO, MOTO and PHYLAWS are some of the new EU research projects that address the architecture and functionality needs for 5G / beyond 4G networks. In particular, the METIS project gains a EUR 16 million fresh EU investment. Overall, from 2007 to 2013 EU investments amount to more than EUR 700 million for research on future networks, half of which is allocated to wireless technologies, contributing to development of 4G and beyond 4G.

French telecom sector mobilises for 5G - report

France is mobilising for 5G and with an Orange-led consortium constituted to bid in a 5G standardisation tender due to be launched in November, Les Echos reports. The consortium includes Alcatel-Lucent, Thales, Sequans and eBlink and will have to partner other European players to qualify for EU research money. French manufacturers will be in competition with large Asian groups such as Samsung and Huawei, which plans to invest USD 600 million in 5G by 2018.

Anite-led Metis task group defines 5G channel models

Wireless testing systems provider Anite has announced that an Anite-led task group within the Metis project has published channel models for 5G. The interim channel models were co-authored by eight Metis partners and approved by other key members for publication. Samsung in 2020 klaar met 5G

Samsung heeft gezegd dat het een technologie in ontwikkeling heeft waarmee mobiele internetsnelheden kunnen worden behaald van tientallen gigabits (download).
