EC confirms opposition to NL cable draft legislation
The European Commission has confirmed its opposition to the Dutch draft legislation aimed at forcing cable operators to open up their networks to third parties, commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a meeting with European cable CEOs in Brussels. The cable industry is particularly concerned with two amendments related to the Dutch implementation of EU telecom directives as well as one amendment to the country's media law. The sector is questioning whether the amendments comply with the EU regulatory framework, which only opens up infrastructure if a market analysis has identified a dominant network. Kroes said that the Commission will use all of its powers to oppose these amendments. The meeting in Brussels included Zon CEO Rodrigo Costa, Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries, Telenet CEO Duco Sickinghe, Ziggo CEO Bernard Dijkhuizen, Virgin Media CEO Andrew Barron, and Kabel Deutschland Group COO Manuel Cubero.
