Eircom confirms fibre roll-out, IPTV service plans
Eircom Group has announced the first phase of a plan to upgrade Ireland's telecommunications infrastructure by rolling out fibre-based access technologies. It plans to roll out fibre to 100,000 premises by summer 2012 in Phase 1 of a multi-year roll-out that aims to deliver fibre services to one million homes and businesses. This will involve an investment of over EUR 100 million to upgrade the existing copper network with FTTC and FTTH technology. Separately, Eircom confirmed plans to offer IPTV services from mid-2012. It will launch a range of entertainment services over fibre including IPTV, video on demand, catch up TV and social media via TV.

Eircom sees continued fall in EBITDA

Eircom remains in discussions with its lenders on refinancing, as its latest business plan sees a continued erosion in profits. The Irish operator said it still expects to break its debt covenants in August, and is in talks on a waiver while it renegotiates debts. UPC Ireland to create 50 jobs, invest in broadband

UPC Ireland is to create 50 new jobs over the coming weeks. The new jobs will include customer service, sales, management and administrative roles and will bring UPC's staff numbers to 895 in Ireland. At the same time, UPC plans to invest almost EUR 80 million in its Docsis 3.0 network.

Minister welcomes Eircom next-generation broadband plans

Irish Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte has welcomed plans by Eircom to make additional investment in the roll out of Next Generation Broadband. He said that the deployment of faster broadband to more places as soon as possible was a priority for the Irish government, and that this announcement by Eircom was another step towards achieving that target.

Magnet welcomes Eircom fibre, wholesale reform plans

Irish broadband provider Magnet Networks has welcomed Eircom's fibre investment and wholesale reform announcements. Magnet CEO Mark Kellett said that the announcements presented an opportunity to drive real change. He said that if Eircom delivers on its promises, it will result in a new phase for consumers, businesses and the telecommunications industry in Ireland.
