Emilia-Romagna reaches 10,000 Wi-Fi hotspots milestone
The northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has succeeded in reaching the milestone of 10,000 free public Wi-Fi hotspots, reports Corriere delle Comunicazioni, citing figures from regional in-house company Lepida. The achievement is the culmination of a four-year project launched in 2017 to create at least one access point for every 10,000 inhabitants by combining the various regional, national and European initiatives such as Wifi4EU, Piazza Wifi Italia and Addota un Wifi.

The northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has announced plans to invest EUR 1.3 million to bring free Wi-Fi to numerous sports centres. A total of over 460 public Wi-Fi hotspots will be installed in the project, to be carried out by in-house company Lepida.

The northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has activated more than 250 free public Wi-Fi hotspots in the main coastal resorts as part of the 'Costa WiFi' project, reports Corriere delle Comunicazioni, citing figures from regional in-house company Lepida. The project connects Lepida's fibre backbone to access points largely supplied by state infrastructure agency Infratel under the "Piazza WiFi Italia" initiative.

Italy tops 16,000 connected schools

Italian state infrastructure agency Infratel announced that its Connected Schools high-speed broadband initiative has reached 16,258 activations around 19 months after its launch. At the end of November, fibre connections had been activated in a total of 14,797 schools under Infratel's own core scheme plus 1,461 schools from regional partner companies.

State infrastructure agency Infratel said its Connected Schools high-speed broadband venture has passed the milestone of 10,000 schools around 10 months after its launch. Fibre connections had been activated in a total of 10,041 schools at the end of February, including 8,854 under its own core scheme plus 1,187 schools from regional partner companies.

Average Italian mobile internet speed up to 78 Mbps on TIM, Vodafone and WindTre networks

Mobile download speeds on Italy's three largest mobile networks (TIM, Vodafone, WindTre) reached an average of 78 Mbps across 45 Italian cities between August and November, according to the latest tests carried out by the Ugo Bordoni Foundation for telecom regulator Agcom. The figure is a 15 percent improvement on the year-earlier result, with upload speeds also rising, by 10 percent year on year, to an average of 32 Mbps.

Florence consolidated its position as the leading Italian smart city according to the ICityRank 2021 survey conducted by FPA, a Digital360 company. TIM and partners set up 5G private network at Bologna's BI-REX centre

Telecom Italia (TIM) said it has set up a private wireless 5G network at the BI-REX competence centre in Bologna in partnership with JMA, Athonet, Alascom, WiLab and the University of Bologna, among others. The network will guarantee a stable connection, with the low latency and bandwidth necessary for the optimal operation of the Bologna centre's Pilot Line, focused on areas such as Big Data, advanced manufacturing and robotics.

Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) announced that over 3,200 localities and 150 hospitals have signed up to the EUR 45 million 'Wi-Fi Italia' project since it was launched in February 2019. Ribbon, TIM upgrade Lepida broadband network in Emilia Romagna

Ribbon Communications has again teamed up with Telecom Italia (TIM) to upgrade the capacity of Lepida ScpA's broadband network in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Italy's Lepida to upgrade broadband network with ECI

Israeli telecommunications equipment provider ECI has announced a contract to upgrade the broadband network of Lepida, the in-house company of the Emilia Romagna region in northern Italy. Under the terms of the deal, ECI will provide Lepida with an end-to-end 10/100/200G regional WDM network with a 96 channel, tunable flex grid and high-capacity OTN cross connect in the main POPs, based on ECI's Apollo packet-optical family.
