Engie buys public transport Wi-Fi system provider Icomera

French energy firm Engie announced that it has acquired Swedish company Icomera through its subsidiary ENGIE Ineo, which specialises in infrastructure projects in the energy, transport and telecom sectors. No financial details of the takeover were disclosed.

Founded in 1999, Icomera provides public transport onboard Wi-Fi connectivity systems in several countries. Headquartered in Sweden, it has 150 employees and has subsidiaries in the US, the UK, Germany and France.

Icomera expects to complete Swedish railway deployment by end of 2018

State-owned Swedish rail operator SJ has reached the midpoint in its latest passenger Wi-Fi expansion on its closed carriage trains. In total, 232 carriages of thirteen different vehicle type will be integrated with Icomera's mobile internet connectivity and application platform. Full deployment is due by the end of 2018.

Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Regio Mitte has begun installing free passenger Wi-Fi on 24 of its new Main-Neckar-Ried (MNR) Express trains in the Frankfurt metropolitan area, as part of a service contract between the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV), the Transport Association of Rhine-Neckar (VRN) and the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Engie subsidiary Icomera will provide railway passengers with Wi-Fi via its X6i router, with deployment due for completion by summer 2018.

Deutsche Bahn launches Wi-Fi pilot project on Munich S-Bahn

Engie's Icomera said Deutsche Bahn has launched a pilot Wi-Fi service on a train running on its local S-Bahn route in Munich, offering passengers free Wi-Fi onboard with unlimited data and session time allowances at speeds up to 100 Mbps. Deutsche Bahn said it launched the pilot project to see how free Wi-Fi benefits customers and is used during the S-Bahn's daily operations. The company will evaluate user feedback on the service at the end of the trial period, said Icomera.

Free Wi-Fi is now available to all passengers on all Arriva Trains Wales (ATW) services, supported by GBP 1.5 million Welsh Government funding, plus additional funding from the Department of Transport. The service is provided by Icomera.

Icomera provides Wi-Fi on ten more Cardiff buses

Icomera, the Swedish provider of internet connectivity for public transport services, announced that the UK's Cardiff Bus will invest GDP 1.5 million in ten new Alexander Dennis vehicles to serve the Cardiff, Newport and Vale of Glamorgan region, equipped with Icomera Wi-Fi. Free 4G Icomera Wi-Fi has already been available to passengers travelling on 220 Cardiff Bus vehicles since March 2015.

21net, Engie to bring Wi-Fi to all French TGV fleet in 2017

As France sees the launch of free Wi-Fi on the first TGV train line, 21net and Engie Ineo have announced that they are working with rail operator SNCF to roll-out the service to the entire TGV fleet by the end of 2017. Awarded earlier this year, the contract includes the delivery of an open platform bringing Wi-Fi connectivity to 300 trains, dynamically using bandwidth from 3G and LTE mobile networks.

Icomera upgrades Swedish railway Wi-Fi on some trains

Icomera, the Swedish provider of internet connectivity for public transport, said that passengers of Swedish railway company SJ can now surf the web at significantly faster speeds. Icomera has recently upgraded the onboard network on X 2000 trains. Passengers travelling on the 36 upgraded trains will be able to go online at a minimum of 1 Mbps, which is twice the previous speed.
