Ericsson starts Swedish 5G research programme

Ericsson has announced the start of a '5G for Sweden' research programme, in conjunction with Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Chalmers University of Technology, Lund University, The Institute of Technology, Linkoping University and Swedish ICT, part of RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden). Industrial partners include Scania and Volvo Construction Equipment. Ericsson will cooperate with Scania to address future transport developments, in the Integrated Transport Research Lab at KTH.

The programme aims to strengthen competiveness by effectively developing and integrating ICT in products and services based on 5G standards. It will initiate research that can be applied across industries and to create new projects at universities and research institutes, as well as several industry pilots of possible 5G systems. Vinnova, the national innovation agency, is supporting the research projects.

Tele2 and Telenor established Net4Mobility in 2009 to jointly build and operate a national 4G/LTE network.

Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS said it is holding a 5G forum at its headquarters on 04 May to discuss comprehensive matters to do with the development of the new technology. This is intended to be the first of a number of meetings regarding 5G, which will take place several times a year.

Telia takes part in 5G pilot scheme for mining sector

Telia said it is taking part in the Pilot for Industrial Mobile Communication in Mining (PIMM), a scheme to look at the contribution that digitisation can make improving safety and productivity in the mining sector. The idea is to use 5G to connect and remotely control machinery and vehicles used in mines.The project is being financed by national innovation agency Vinnova and the project participants, who include ABB, Boliden, Ericsson, SICS Swedish ICT, Lulea Technical University, Volve CE and Wolfit.

Blackberry considers shutting down Swedish offices

BlackBerry is considering closing its offices in Sweden, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal website, citing the company. It said this would put up to 100 employees out of work. The announcement comes as Blackberry focuses on developing mobile security and productivity software to reignite growth, said the WSJ. The Canadian smartphone maker, which employs about 7,000 people globally, said it would make a final decision on the closure after completing talks with workers' unions.
