Ericsson, Telia, Volvo CE team up on 5G for industrial use
Ericsson, Volvo Construction Equipment and Telia are operating Sweden’s first 5G network for industrial use at Volvo CE's research and development facility in Eskilstuna, a municipality approximately 90 kilometers west of Stockholm. This allows Volvo CE to test remote-controlled machines and autonomous products with the technology.

Operated with a test licence, the 5G network comprises Ericsson commercial hardware and software, including 5G New Radio and Core products from Ericsson’s 5G Platform.

The partners aim to create products for remote control of construction machinery and fully automated products. The partners also aim to increase industry efficiency and sustainability through 5G testing. Volvo CE hopes to be able to apply the lessons learned from tests at Eskilstuna to its global activities.

Telia declares success of 5G remote timber yard control demonstration at SCA

Telia Company said the Remote Timber project with Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet), Biometria, SCA, Volvo CE and forestry research institute Skogforsk have successfully demonstrated a 5G-connected and remote-controlled lumber loader for the first time at SCA's wood terminal in Timra. The aim is to streamline operation and provider a safer, better working environment without machine vibrations, noise and solitary work.

Telia, Ericsson start industrial plant inspection service via drone

Telia Company and Ericsson's internal accelerator, Ericsson ONE, have announced a service to livestream the inspection of industrial installations using drones. A development scheme starts on 29 January with customers Vattenfall, E-on, Peab, Veidekke and the Vinnova project Edit 3.0. ​The Telia Drone Inspection Service is based on Ericsson ONE's new drone mobility project and enables companies to reach difficult environments such as construction sites, railways, power grids and tall.

Telia provides private 4G network to Zinkgruvan Mining

Telia Company has announced that Lundin Mining subsidiary Zinkgruvan Mining has become the first business in Sweden to commission a tailored mobile network from the operator. It will cover 48 km of tunnels and routes at a depth of 1,300 metres. It will be independent of Telia's network above ground but will have high capacity, availability and reliability.

Eighty-six percent of Swedes have heard of 5G but only 33 percent know what it can be used for, said Telia Company, citing a survey carried out by Kantar Sifo in early November. One quarter (25%) say the are excited about 5G.

Telia opens 5G network at Mid Sweden University for research into industrial applications

Telia said that it and the Mid Sweden University based in Sundsvall and Ostersund have installed the first 5G network in the Norrland region of the country. It will focus on industrial applications of 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). The aim is to accelerate research in remote control and autonomous driving for industrial and forestry vehicles.

3 Sweden agrees to lease spectrum to Ukkoverkot for Swedish private LTE networks

3 Sweden said it has signed an agreement to lease spectrum to Finnish operator Ukkoverkot for its development of private LTE networks for Swedish industry. Tre said this is the first time a commercial operator has rented out frequencies locally. The deal will require authorisation from watchdog PTS.

The partners demonstrated ways in which new technologies can assist in preventing thousands of road accidents every year. SK Telecom completes Galaxy S10 tests on 5G network

South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has completed key tests of its 5G network on Samsung Electronics' upcoming 5G smartphone as part of preparation for its commercial rollout scheduled for 5 April, Yonhap news agency reports. SK Telecom said it has conducted extensive tests on Samsung's 5G flagship smartphone over the past two months, including inter-operability with its 5G network, interface and frequency, as well as on some 100 scenarios.

TDC picks Ericsson for 5G and managed services deal, transfers 100 network staff

Ericsson said that Danish operator TDC has selected it to supply its nationwide commercial 5G network and provide managed services through the Ericsson Operations Engine. The deal includes transferring about 100 TDC network operations workers to Ericsson. TDC expects to start trialing 5G mid-year, with roll-out due to begin in October 2019.

Hungary's fixed broadband subscriptions up 14,000 to 2.991 mln in December

Hungary's number of fixed-line voice subscriptions increased to 3.080 million in December from 3.076 million in November, according to data from local telecom regulator NMHH. The total number of fixed broadband subscriptions rose by 14,000 to 2.991 million. The number of voice over cable lines increased to 1.067 million from 1.063 million, and the number of VoIP users remained unchanged at 1.625 million. Ericsson and Epiroc jointly develop wireless services for mining companies

Epiroc has partnered with Ericsson provide mining companies with wireless connectivity in their operations through LTE and 5G.  The service for both underground pits and open cast mines has been tested on Epiroc machines at its test mine in Kvarntorp in Sweden. More testing will be done before commercial launch.

Ericsson, Telia provide 5G connectivity for driverless Einride trucks at DB Schenker in Sweden

Ericsson said its Ericsson Radio System and Ericsson Cloud Core are enabling 5G connectivity in conjunction with Telia Company for the Einride T-pod, a driverless vehicle operating continuously at logistics firm DB Schenker's depot in Jonkoping. This is the first commercial installation of Einride's Autonomous Electric Transportation (AET) system.

Telia Company said it has joined forces with Ericsson and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) to boost 5G development in Sweden. In a new agreement, Telia and KTH will build an environment at the KTH campus in which 5G networks can be tested and developed. Together with Ericsson as an equipment partner, Telia will work with different industry players to create an innovative arena.
