ETB, UNE, Emcali study merger
The mayors of Colombian cities Bogota, Medelin, and Cali have signed a MoU, which marks the first step towards an alliance among telecoms operators Telecomunicaciones de Bogota (ETB), UNE and Emcali. The agreement follows nearly four months of negotiations between the parties involved. Via this agreement, the three operators from the municipalities of Bogota, Cali and Medellin aim to better compete on the Colombian telecoms market. The mayors agreed on the creation of a working group composed of the presidents of the three companies, and three teams of technical specialists from ETB, UNE and Emcali. Under the terms of the MoU, this group will define the "mechanisms of cooperation", local newspaper Portafolio reports. The operators are also studying the feasibility of a merger plan which would see ETB, UNE and Emcali joining forces to become the third national telecoms operator in Colombia.
