EU asks member states to look into Apple warranties
EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding wants member states to look into the way Apple advertises its product warranties, Bloomberg reported. Reding, in charge of data protection, wrote a letter to member countries, asking them to check whether Apple correctly advertised a warranty of at least two-years for its products. Der Spiegel reported Reding's letter. "Apple prominently advertised that its products come with a one-year manufacturer warranty but failed to clearly indicate the consumers' automatic and free-of-cost entitlement to a minimum two-year guarantee under EU law," Reding said to ministers in the letter, adding that "these are unacceptable marketing practices." Apple declined to comment, beyond referring to Apple's EU statutory warranty page on its website. According to that, EU consumer law covers defects in the product at the time of delivery, while Apple's one-year limited warranty and the AppleCare protection plan cover defects arising after the buyer gets the device. Different sanctions exist in EU countries for violations of consumer protection law.
