Eutelsat expands use of Express Wi-Fi in partnership with Facebook in Sub-Saharan Africa

Eutelsat says its expanding its use of the Express Wi-Fi platform in partnership with Facebook to provide broadband services via satellite across several regions in Sub-Saharan Africa. It aims to connect thousands of people in rural and underserved communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana and Zimbabwe.

Express Wi-Fi was developed by Facebook Connectivity and enables partners to run their Wi-Fi businesses in a scalable way. It is used in more than 30 countries, including in several Asian, South American and African markets.

Eutelsat and Facebook have previously conducted successful pilots in DRC, helping thousands of people.

Eutelsat secures multi-year contract renewal with Overon

Satellite operator Eutelsat announced a multi-year, multi-transponder agreement that expands its existing relationship with broadcast services company Overon, part of Mediapro group. Under this contract for Ku wide-beam resources, Overon will rely on Eutelsat's 10A satellite with a provision to transfer to 10B once it enters service, for capacity at the 10 degrees East orbital position.

Eutelsat grows contract backlog in fiscal Q3, as downward revenue trend continues

Satellite operator Eutelsat said that its contract backlog increased 6 percent year-on-year in the three months to March (fiscal Q3) to reach EUR 4.5 billion, or 3.5 years of revenues. Roke Telkom offers 30 minutes' more Express Wi-Fi Internet service daily for 12 days

Ugandan operator  Roke Telecom has announced the it will provide an extra 30 minutes' service per day for twelve days on its free Express Wi-Fi internet service. The offer runs from 29 March until 11 April. This follows an announcement of its partnership with Facebook to provide high-speed internet to the public in October last year.

Sub-Saharan Africa mobile data traffic to grow by over 6 times by 2026

Ericsson says mobile data traffic in Sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to grow by almost 6.5 times the current figures, with total traffic increasing from 0.87 exabytes (EB) per month in 2020 to 5.6 EB by 2026. According to Ericsson's Mobility Report, the average traffic per smartphone is expected to reach 8.9 GB over the forecast period. As the demand for capacity and coverage of mobile networks continues to grow, service providers are expected to keep investing in their networks.

Malawi govt picks TNM to provide 30 free public Wi-Fi hotspots over 3 years

The Malawian government has partnered with mobile operator TNM to provide free Wi-Fi in selected public places in the country over a three-year period, Nyasatimes reported. The initiative is being implemented by Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC) under the Digital Project Malawi and 30 hotspots will be set up, including in schools, libraries, hospitals and markets. Users will be given 120 MB for browsing each day with an option to buy more.

A total of 3.9 billion people, equivalent to 51.2 percent of the global population, will be using the internet by the end of 2018, according to a new study published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
