Facebook profit jumps 63% in Q1, grows to 2.2 bln monthly users

Facebook reported a strong increase in sales and earnings in the first quarter, with growth rates accelerating from the previous quarter. Revenues rose 49 percent year-on-year to USD 11.97 billion, and net profit was up 63 percent to USD 4.99 billion or USD 1.69 per share. 

The social network's daily active users averaged 1.45 billion in March, up 13 percent from a year earlier and an increase from 1.40 billion in December. Monthly active users also rose by 13 percent on an annual basis, to 2.20 billion from 2.13 billion in the previous quarter. 

Capital expenditure totaled USD 2.81 billion in the quarter, leaving free cash flow of USD 5.05 billion. Facebook finished the period with USD 43.96 billion in cash. The company said it authorised in April another USD 9 billion for share buybacks, on top of the existing programme worth USD 6 billion.
