The FCC has opened a public consultation on opening up new bands of spectrum above 3.7 GHz and below 24 GHz for 5G mobile services. Specifically, it's considering the mid-range bands 3.7-4.2 GHz, 5.925-6.425 GHz and 6.425-7.125 GHz, while respondents can also identify other frequencies not in use by the government that may be suitable for use.
In addition to interest in the bands, the regulator is looking for feedback on how to allow flexible use while avoiding interference. This may include different types of autorisation, such as non-exclusive or unlicensed use, or modifying existing service rules to make the bands more suitable for mobile.
The move was widely welcomed by the mobile industry, including a coalition formed by AT&T, Broadcom, Cisco, Comsearch, CTIA, Ericsson, Google, HPE, Intel, Information Technology Industry Council, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, Verizon and the Wi-Fi Alliance. In a statement, they also welcomed efforts by Congress to increase the amount of spectrum available for next-generation services.
