FCC starts consultation on broadband spectrum needs
The US Federal Communications Commission opened a public consultation on the use of radio spectrum for expanding access to broadband services. In particular, the regulator wants comments on whether current spectrum allocations, including those below 3.7GHz, are sufficient for meeting the goals of the National Broadband Plan. Industry discussions to date on the broadband plan have found the need for more consultation on specific topics. Participants have warned that the US will soon not have sufficient spectrum to meet the growing demand for wireless broadband services, and the FCC wants more details on operator plans for current spectrum allocations and next-generation services. Comments from the ongoing consultation over wireless innvoation and more fficient spectrum use will also be used in the deliberations. The consultation is open until 23 October.
