FCC to block LightSquared network roll-out

US regulators are set to block LightSquared's proposed LTE/satellite network, after concluding it would cause serious interference with GPS devices. In a letter summarising the tests to date, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration told the FCC that there is "no practical way to mitigate the potential interference at this time". LightSquared said it still hoped to find a solution with the government and GPS industry. The company has questioned the parameters of the tests conducted and also tried to push the blame on the GPS industry, saying it has usurped spectrum licensed to LightSquared. After receiving the NTIA's letter, the FCC issued a statement saying it planned to reject LightSquared's application to build its network because of the GPS concerns, the Wall Street Journal reports. The FCC said it was proposing to revoke a conditional approval it gave to LightSquared last year. LightSquared may still appeal, and the FCC's decision is subject to public comment.
