FCC to vote on incentive auctions proposal
US FCC chairman Julius Genachowski has issued a proposal to go ahead with so-called 'incentive auctions', which will offer broadcasters a share of the auction proceeds for surrendering their radio frequencies for mobile broadband services. Approved by legislation in February, the proposal is part of the National Broadband Plan and will be voted on at the FCC's 28 September meeting. It also includes plans to open up more unlicensed spectrum for wireless broadband services such as Wi-Fi. Genachowski said this would create the first uniform, national low-band unlicensed spectrum in any country. The FCC also confirmed that it will look at rules for the sale and acquisition of spectrum holdings at its meeting later this month.
