Foxconn to assemble high-end iPhones in India - report
Foxconn will start assembling high-end iPhones in India from next year for Apple, the Nikkei reported. Sources said the move could help Apple limit the impact of a trade war between the US and China. Work will be performed by a local unit of Foxconn at Foxconn's plant in Sriperumbudur town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. 

Foxconn, which already makes phones for Xiaomi in India, will invest INR 25 billion (USD 356 million) to expand the plant, including investment in iPhone production, Tamil Nadu's Industries Minister M C Sampath told Reuters. The investment may create as many as 25,000 jobs, he added.

These proposals may be included in the federal budget to be announced on 1 February, an unnamed official source said.

Apple will soon open its retail store in India. The company has drawn up a list of suitable locations, which include several sites in Mumbai, Bloomberg reports, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter. According to the same sources, Apple plans to make a final decision in the next few weeks. The selected locations are similar to iconic Apple locations on Fifth Avenue in New York, Regent Street in London or the Champs-Elysees in Paris, the sources added.

The EU said India had pledged as a member of the WTO to not impose duties on these products, but it has been charging rates of 7.5-20 percent on such products imported into the country.
