The French government will claim EUR 1.6 billion in back taxes from Google, an official at the finance ministry told Reuters. Google has been criticised for its use of tax optimisation techniques whereby it transfers profits earned to countries with low rates of corporate tax. The person said, "As far as our country is concerned, back taxes concerning this company amount to EUR 1.6 billion." A spokesperson for Google France would not comment other than to say that the company obeyed tax regulations in all countries where it operated. The Finance Ministry would not comment on the matter.
