Several measures in France’s latest anti-waste legislation have come into force at the start of 2022, also affecting the telecom market. A new obligation on telecom operators means that customers will be able to access detailed information on the amount of data they consume, with the estimated level of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from this usage. From January, this information will need to be available online in the client space on a monthly basis, and could eventually be included in the customer bill.
Also from January, two new measures have been adopted to facilitate the repair of devices such as laptops and smartphones. Manufacturers must ensure the availability of specific spare parts and accessories for a minimum period of time, going from two to five years, depending on the part. The list includes for example phone chargers, batteries and front/rear cameras.
After-sale repair services will also need to comply with a new obligation to offer selected spare parts and accessories sourced from the circular economy. Covering a wide range of devices, this measure specifies eleven common components found in smartphones.
