Gartner expects global smartphone sales to fall 2.5% in 2019

New research from Gartner expects global sales of smartphones to end users to reach 1.5 billion units in 2019, down 2.5 percent from 2018. Japan (-6.5%), W Europe (-5.3%) and N America (-4.4%) will record the largest declines.

Gartner expects global smartphone sales to grow again in 2020, driven by wider availability of 5G models and the promotion of 5G service packages by telecoms operators worldwide. The first 5G iPhone is also expected to launch in 2020, which should encourage iPhone users to upgrade. Sales of 5G smartphones are expected to top 15 million in 2019, to account for less than 1 percent of total smartphone sales for the year.

The research shows that global demand for smartphones in 1st-half 2019 was weakened by longer device replacement cycles and a ban on Huawei accessing US technology suppliers. Gartner expects demand to fall further in the second-half as replacement of low, mid and high-end models continues to slow.
