Glo Ghana launches commercial services
Nigeria-based mobile operator Glo has finally launched commercial services in Ghana. The company said 1.5 million customers had earlier reserved numbers with it in the 023-3 and 023-5 number series, and the Glo network has been activated. The company noted that customers might have to wait for a while for their registration to be verified and validated before their Glo SIM could be activated, because of the ongoing Sim registration exercise in Ghana. Glo's launch on 29 April brought a three-year long wait to an end, and it came only after the National Communication Authority (NCA) had fined Glo USD 200,000 for failure to launch and cover at least six regions in the country within two years of its licence, which was issued in 2008, MyJoyOnline reported. The company is starting with 85 percent coverage of Ghana, providing services in 974 cities and 10,000 villages. All new customers on Glo will get GHS 20 credit free everyday for the first 100 days after they join Glo. That's equal to about three minutes of calls free. New customers also get an up to 100 percent bonus on every recharge, five hours free night calls for spending GHS 10 in a day, one minute bonus to call any network for every three minutes of calls received, and one special phone number (Sweet Number) to call for only GHS 2 per minute.
