Global cable telephony penetration to reach 19% in 2009

The cable telephony equipment market will reach USD 946 million by 2010 from USD 448 million in 2004, according to newly released forecast from Dittberner Associates. Dittberner identified 10.9 million cable telephony subscribers at the end of 2004 (mostly circuit switched) and expects widespread commercial deployment of VoIP over cable in 2005/06 timeframe. The take up of VoIP cable telephony is expected to be very aggressive, provided the price is right. Dittberner research also reveals that cable operators in US, notably Comcast and Cox Communications, already deployed major voice over IP telephony programs and are realizing substantial penetration rates. Pointing to deployments from MSOs in US and Japan, Dittberner expects an even better 2005. Specifically, the research firm projects there will be 15.21 million cable telephone subscribers by the end of this year, mostly coming from new VoIP cable additions. Dittberner predicts that worldwide cable telephony penetration will reach 18 percent by 2009.
