Global smartphone market slows to 2.3% growth in 2016

Global smartphone shipments rose 6.9 percent year-on-year to 400.7 million units in the last quarter of 2016, helped by strength in large markets such as China, the US and Brazil, IDC reported. The market researcher estimates the market grew 2.3 percent over the full year 2016 to 1.44 billion units, slowing considerably from 10.4 percent growth in 2015. IDC confirmed that Apple surpassed Samsung in the fourth quarter, with a market share of 18.3 percent. Samsung fell to 18.1 percent of the market, as its shipments dropped an estimated 5.2 percent year-on-year to 77.5 million, versus 78.3
