Google has unveiled the latest version of the Android operating system during the solar eclipse in the US on 21 August. Known as Android 8.0 Oreo, the first developers preview of the software was released already in March.
The new software will roll out first to Google's own Pixel and Nexus devices, and by the end of the year, also to phones from Essential, General Mobile, HMD Global (Nokia), Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sharp and Sony.
New features in Android 8.0 include picture-in-picture, to run two apps at once on the screen, such as a video call and email, and notification dots, to make it easier to see what's new and take action on app notifications.
Google also included increased security on Android Oreo, with Google Play Protect for all devices running Google Play. The includes tighter controls for app installs and more regular security updates. As with most Android updates, Google also promises better battery performance, as Android Oreo helps minimize battery use from apps running in the background. In addition, Android 8.0 should start up the device faster.
Other additions include Autofill to remember app logins and Android Instant Apps, to launch apps directly from the browser with no need for installation. In addition, Android Oreo comes with a full range of new emojis.
The Android OS is used by over 2 billion active devices around the world.
